Road Scholar is the new name for the exciting learning adventures created by Elderhostel. Road Scholar is new, but the definition has been in the making since the first Elderhostel programs back in 1975. As a matter of fact, Elderhostel is still the name of our organization. We’re just launching a new name for our programs.

Elderhostel is the nation's first and the world's largest education and travel organization for adults. We take our goal of lifelong learning seriously at the Center for Educational Adventure and are dedicated to providing exceptional learning opportunities with programs that exemplify the educational content expected by our participants.

We offer programs at a number of locations in Georgia and one in Florida. Locations include: Americus, Atlanta, Hiawassee, Amicalola Falls, St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island, Sapelo Island, Cumberland Island, and Amelia Island, FL. Last year 3538 people participated in our Road Scholar programs.

In addition to land based programs, the Center for Educational Adventure provides two Road Scholar cruises per year that travel from Jacksonville, FL to Charleston, SC. This cruise operates in reverse traveling from Charleston to Jacksonville. Each cruise enjoys lectures along the way and field trips at each port city.

Courses and field trips revolve around the history and ecology of the different areas. Our outdoor adventure programs include: kayaking, bicycling, island hopping, canoeing, and hiking. One program takes you on a day long train trip into the Smoky Mountains to study train history.

We partner with the American Foreign Service in Washington to provide a program where former ambassadors from many different countries come and speak to our group.

Located in Atlanta, GA, this program includes field trips to the Atlanta History Center, CNN, Center for Disease Control, the Martin Luther King Museum, antebellum plantations and experiencing the taste of the local cuisine.

Our partners in education include: University of Georgia Marine Research Institute, Brunswick Marine Extension Center, the American Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., Amelia Island Museum, Okefenokee Swamp, Cumberland Island National Park Service, Sapelo Island DNR, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, and the Carter Center in Atlanta to name a few.

"Excellent leader. Whole program was good. I am a new widow and am very pleased about how easy it is to work into a crowd of Road Scholars and be comfortable. Thank you for making that possible."
